BEWARE: This Adult Language Crime Fiction has more than its share of F-bombs to season the liberal use of profanities, gutter talk and adult situations. If this were a film it likely would be rated PG 13.

Quick Overview

Told, in part, in first person POV, but also in third person when the main character is not in the scene, this is a fast-paced Action-Adventure work of engaging Crime Fiction. Indeed, although, putting the story down was far more challenging than most novels.

To be sure, this is not a literary classic. Further, the main character is not the sort of guy I would want to get chummy with. He is detestable, obnoxious and, an exciting sort of bully with a conscience. And he loves his daughter.

As I said, I can’t say that I like the guy, but he definitely has some redeeming features. I detest him greatly, but, if I was having trouble with somebody, I’d be calling this guy my buddy. Then, I’d go to confession and ask forgiveness for my sins.

Length: Print, 106 pages. Not available as an Audible selection, but it sure should be. In fact, this is a prime candidate for HBO.

Q - How was this book obtained?
A – Bought on Amazon.

Q - Is this a book that I can read without having to read others first?
A – This is the first in a series.

Q – If this is a recurring character or a series, does it have a cliffhanger ending?
A – No cliffhanger ending.

Q - Are there a lot of typos/misspellings, grammatical errors or other editing failures?
A – No.

Q - Is this a fast, easy read or is it more of a leisure read?
A – This is an engaging page turner. A fast read.

Q - My biggest pleasure or disappointment?
A – Although I really enjoyed the story, it is pretty far out there, like a pulp fiction novel. I found myself second-guessing a few of the scenes, but, then eagerly suspended my disbelief and plowed ahead.

One thing that added value to me is his brief glossary of confusing terms at the end of the story. Especially useful to me as I am not a Brit.

To give a feel for the editing, and the style and flow of this work, I am posting a brief excerpt below.

Excerpt

‘…Few people have a car here. Most are beat-up rust buckets a couple of decades old.

That’s why I drive the Peugeot. It’s fast, with a turbo engine. But it’s not fancy enough to get nicked.

I walk across the car park to the flats, pink balloon tugging in the wind. It's one of those fancy ones. A big number nineteen, tied with sparkly ribbon instead of string.

Don't wanna leave it in the car in case someone steals it.

The block of flats looms high over me. Looks more like an open prison than a residential area.

I notice a black Mercedes saloon parked up near the main entrance to my block. Not a raindrop on it. Means the owner keeps it undercover, lives local and only just arrived.

I look around me. I don’t see any trouble, so I head into the open communal area at the bottom of the block.

The lifts are playing up again. There’s a scruffy note, written in biro and taped to the breezeblock wall. Someone kicked the sxxx out of a lift door and now both are knackered.

So I take the stairs. Seven floors up. Concrete steps and naked walls scrawled in graffiti and stained with old piss.

No, make that fresh piss.

Disgusting.

I feel the climb in my legs. I’m not quite as young and fit as I used to be. For a second, it occurs to me that I might be getting too old for this business.

Then I think, nah. Gotta get back in the gym, that's all. Lay off the cake and biscuits.

I’m five floors up when I hear another pair of feet a couple of flights below. Heavy scuffs in shoes. The formal kind.

Must be someone dressed up for court, I think.

But as I round the railing onto the next flight, I see a…’

Bottom Line:

I abhor characters like this, yet, I devoured the story and will read the next in the series voraciously. I won’t, however, be recommending it to my friends and neighbors at church…

Four stars out of five.

Breaker Charlie Cobb Book #1 Fast Paced Action Thriller Series edition by Rob Aspinall Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I found this a quick read, action scene after action scene interspersed with some thinking.
The whole read felt like a script mix of action movie and slapstick; one can see some indirect humor in how things worked out positively for the protagonist. His so-caller reform was only partly so, he still stole cars and fought, but had the best of luck when fighting, so he survived to live another day. I was not enamored by him, and don't think I will look for any following books.
Breaker (Charlie Cobb) is a hired hit man for the Mafia. He's a tough guy, but with a 19 year old daughter who wants him to become a "good guy" again, he begins to get a conscience & realizes it feels pretty good. But this is the only work he has ever known so it's hard to break old habits. Has lots of action, fast paced, dark humor, the language is foul at times, but is a good read. I have not read any of his other books yet, but I feel this might be the beginning of a great new Charlie Cobb series.
This was a surprisingly good story. For a novella, the characters came to life, the action was fast paced and well choreographed. The writing was superb and the editing clean. If you're looking for a quick escape into the world of a mob enforcer, this story will take you there. Proceed at your own risk because it will leave you wanting more.
I really wanted to like this book, but it let me down. For a start I struggled to visualise it as set in Manchester, UK. The internal monologue of the main character was so like a New York gangster and not much like a Mancunian. Fast food burger joints, gangsters and a crim with a daughter studying criminal psychology...hmmm. by Chapter 6 I'd had enough. I'm sorry but that's just how it was. Now if the speech had been more English, and our character less stylised I might have carried on. Note also it's written in first person which I found very offputting. The author could do with more research on a British setting. Here's some examples. He calls the police the 'Fuzz" - now no-one in England would call them that...they might be called the "Bobbies". There are a lot of references to pizza, the baddy owns a pizza joint, the police are always eating pizza. In England it's more likely that they would eat hot chips, or go for an Indian. Pizza and burger joints are an American thing. There is a reference to a "squad car"....what? Also a reference to Colombo, the American TV cop, it would more likely be Morse or Frost (both UK TV cops). As for the thrill of the chase, jumping over hedges, cutting through backyards...what? hello!! Manchester is full of Victorian terrace housing!

So, author, please do a little more research, it just doesn't sound believable.
Touted as being for fans of Lee Child? This ain't no Jack Reacher! Not even close. This is *NOT* a book. This is a short story. A crap short story. The main character was your garden-variety psychopath who seems to enjoy his hired killing sprees. The fact that he loves his daughter and is starting to feel his age was thrown into the mix in a failed attempt to make him less of a homicidal maniac. The *author* seemed to forget books have a beginning, a middle, and an end. The end in particular seemed rushed and contrived (like the rest of the story). I'm the type who will doggedly plow through a book to its bitter end once I start it, and that's the only reason I wasted half an hour of my life on this dreck.
The promo said "if you like Lee Childs....." - WRONG! If you've read any of Lee Childs' books, Jack Reacher may have been a rough character but it was for the right reason, always helping good people. And I find Lee Childs' writings to also flow better. Sorry, can't recommend this one.
